At the recent Chicago Beaver Festival, environmental soundscapes and public engagement came together in a unique celebration of nature. Among the contributors was field-recording professional Shannon Harris, who brought immersive listening experiences to life through his dedication to audio anthropology and conservation education.

Exploring Soundscapes at the Chicago Beaver Festival with the Ranger Backpack

Shannon, serving on the festival’s planning committee as a board member of the Nature Sounds Society and founder of Explorers with Recorders, designed and presented three custom immersive listening kiosks. These featured rare environmental recordings from fellow members, alongside an early debut of the Explorers with Recorders Global Archive. Visitors were also introduced to his ongoing projects documenting remote cultural environments and indigenous soundscapes from around the world.

In addition to the installations, Shannon guided live nature walks, giving children and families the opportunity to experience the world through the ears of a field recordist. Participants became “junior explorers,” learning to listen closely to their surroundings in real time and engage directly with natural soundscapes.

Ranger Backpack in Action

The Ranger backpack proved to be an essential tool throughout the festival. At the listening kiosks, Shannon used it as a mobile production platform, capturing visitor reactions and documentary footage while also supporting wireless transmission equipment for streamlined operation.

During guided nature walks, the backpack functioned as a fully integrated expedition system. It carried recording equipment, supported wireless transmission gear, and enabled hands-free video capture, allowing Shannon to navigate outdoor terrain while leading groups of participants. Its modular design meant that equipment could be rearranged quickly to meet the demands of different environments and activities.

Custom Accessories and Setups To support this work, the Ranger backpack was outfitted with a custom-configured 360° camera system and a wireless transmitter array, working in conjunction with Shannon’s proprietary parabolic microphone rig. This setup created a mobile field-recording platform capable of simultaneously capturing immersive environmental audio and dynamic visual documentation in real time — a configuration rarely seen in live public sound exploration.

Supporting Exploration and Conservation Through projects like Shannon’s, the Ranger backpack proves its role beyond simple equipment storage. It’s a tool that supports creativity, field research, and immersive storytelling, helping explorers, educators, and outdoor professionals bring their vision to life while connecting audiences to the natural world.
